Where Did STDs Come From? A Short History
STDs didn't come from anywhere recent — they evolved alongside humans for millions of years. Herpes lineages predate our species; gonorrhea was described by Greek physicians 1,800 years ago; syphilis exploded across Europe in the 1490s; and HIV jumped from chimpanzees to humans in Central Africa around the early 1900s. Each infection has its own origin story.
Ancient origins: older than writing
Sexually transmitted pathogens are ancient companions. Genetic studies suggest HSV-1 (oral herpes) infected hominids millions of years ago, jumping between ancestral human and chimpanzee lineages. Even pubic lice carry a story: DNA analysis indicates humans acquired them from gorilla ancestors roughly 3–4 million years ago — through close contact, not the obvious joke answer.
Written records follow soon after civilization. Egyptian papyri describe genital complaints; the Hebrew Bible discusses male urethral discharges with quarantine-style rules; Greek physicians coined vocabulary still used today.
Gonorrhea and syphilis: documented histories
Gonorrhea earned its name from Galen in the 2nd century AD — gonorrhoia, "flow of seed," a mistaken reading of urethral discharge. The disease has plagued armies and cities ever since; one 16th-century English outbreak was severe enough that Parliament passed legislation blaming foreign soldiers.
Syphilis is history's most dramatic entrance: an epidemic erupted among French troops besieging Naples in 1494–95 and swept Europe within five years. The "Columbus hypothesis" holds that returning crews carried it from the Americas; competing evidence shows syphilitic bone lesions in Europe beforehand. Either way, the 1530 poem that named it — Girolamo Fracastoro's Syphilis sive morbus gallicus — stuck for good.
The modern additions
- Trichomoniasis: observed microscopically by Alfred Donné in 1836 — one of the first protozoa ever described.
- Herpes simplex: clinically recognized for centuries ("herpes" = Greek "to creep"); HSV-1 and HSV-2 only separated in the 1960s.
- HPV: warts documented since antiquity; the virus itself identified in 1970s-80s work that later won Harald zur Hausen a Nobel Prize (2008).
- HIV: the youngest major STD — simian immunodeficiency virus crossed into humans hunting bushmeat near present-day Kinshasa around the 1910s–1920s, spread quietly along colonial railways, and surfaced as AIDS in 1981.
The honest answer to "why do STDs exist": pathogens evolve wherever transmission works — and sexual contact moves germs efficiently between hosts who would otherwise never share microbes. Every species has them; koalas famously battle chlamydia too.
